I was in the car, he was out riding fences. November 5, 2007
One of my favorite episodes of Seinfeld is the one where Elaine’s boyfriend is obsessed with the song “Desperado”. You know, he makes everyone stop talking and kind of goes into a trance when it comes on? And Elaine decides her song will be Witchy Woman (“Oh… witch-AY woman”)? It’s good stuff.
Tonight I had dinner with some friends and that episode came up. We started talking about what our Desporados are. What song we always turned up and sang along with at the expense of any conversations or other people who might be in the car with us. It made for very interesting discussion.
I think my Desperado is “Mr. Jones” by Counting Crows. A fairly obvious choice for someone my age, but one of my favorites nonetheless. I can’t hear those intro chords and not give everyone in the car a good shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh so I can bust out my best sha-la-la-la-la-la-la.
What is your Desperado?
“All I Want” Toad the Wet Sprocket. I can hear that begin over the grocery store speakers no matter what my wife is saying in my ear at the time.
“what’s goin’ on” -by Marvin Gaye
I hear that opening soprano sax riff and I stop whatever I”m doing, point at the speakers, and start talking about the bass line James Jamerson played. He played it with a hangover, laying on his back in the studio and it’s generally considered the best bass line ever. Yeah….it’s good stuff and I’m a loser for knowing that stuff.
I think I’m gonna have to go with “All My Ex’s Live in Texas” by George Straight.
I have to sing along.. I can’t help it.. especially the part that goes
“And Allison in Galveston somehow lost her sanity..
And Dimples who now lives in Temple’s
Got the LAWWWW lookin’ for me..”
i realized this today, that every time i hear the green day song “basketcase”, i do an air guitar for that bass note at the beginning of the song.
i think my desparado would be “shoebox” by BNL. shoebox of L-I-I-IES.
