Okay, so I have an extra copy of Andrew Peterson’s On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness. And I wanted to come up with some clever way to give it away. So here’s my idea.
On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness is full of scary, fantastical creatures–toothy cows, horned hounds and the dreaded Fangs of Dang. So, you, my fair readers need to come up with the most original, terrible creature you can think of. In the comments section, I need you to post the name of your creature, along with a one to two sentence description. (Please, only one entry per person)
You have until 11:59 p.m., MST, tomorrow (Wednesday). Thursday, I’ll post the winner.
And seriously, if I don’t get a lot of comments, I’m just going to feel like a failure. You don’t want that. Do you?

What a fun contest!! I’ll think hard and be back. Maybe. Not sure I have much creativity in me between tonight and tomorrow night. :p
WOW! Andrew Peterson wrote a book?? How amazing is THAT!!?? And then I see this enticing contest…mmmm I definitely want to win this book, and if not…I’ll just have to order it and buy it myself! hehe Sounds VERY interesting! Let’s see…what could my original, terrible creature be??? Well, let’s say the name would be: The Raging Wolves…..??? Wolves to me are scary because they come out in the darkness, when you can’t see, and I always picture encountering one in the darkness when you are ALONE….so to me, that in reality plus the whole “raging” part…seems pretty scary to me!
I don’t know..I’m probably no where NEAR being original enough…but you can be the judge! hehe Love and miss you lots!!!
A two-headed dog… but with a twist. It was tragically born with only one head!
Most frightening creature I can come up with — a 24-year-old gorgeous supermodel with an IQ of 140, who writes well, loves Jesus, and comes to work in our office! Yikes!!!!
Trogdor the Burninator? (but I stole that from Homestar Runner). Me without coffee or when I’m really hungry and start getting a headache? Oh, I know! Muffin the Wonder Poodle . . .when it’s past her bedtime. Think about it. The breath. The growling and biting. The grumpiness. It’s pretty scary.
Scary creature….
Name: Mortimer
Description: Eleventy feet tall with blue bubbly skin, 3 eyes in a triangular formation on his face, a nose on the back of his head, and a mouth where his neck should be. He doesn’t really have a neck, just a space floating between his shoulders and his head and mainly his problem is that he lurks under your stairs and makes snide comments about your tv shows.
Oooooo spooky!
Name: Bellmoss
This creature lurks in the shadows, waiting to spring on unsuspecting prey. If you can see his scaly green skin, smell his sulfurous breath, and look into his orange reptile eyes, you’re too close and it’s too late. He is 15 feet tall and when he growls, lions even tremble. He has the reflexes of a cat and the speed of a puma, so you can’t outrun him.
I love Andrew Peterson! Didn’t know he’d written a book. Cool!
This monster’s name is Clairabell. She is a two-year-old human. She has mood swings measured in seconds, not hours, and her screams can torture the most mellow mother. She throws tantrums at almost everything, but sleep is the worst. In fact, her parents have not had a good nights sleep in weeks because she likes to wake them up with ear-piercing screams at odd hours of the night. She often smiles sweetly at you right before throwing herself on the floor, and then crying “BUMPED HEAD!!! OWWWW!”

Maniacal monkeys. While monkeys are usually depicted as mischievous, friendly creatures, these monkeys instead swing from tree to tree in pursuit of their prey, cackling and howling through the trees, with beady eyes and evil grins. Yet their end goal is not to find a source of food but to drive any sane creature to a slow tortuous insanity with their mind-melting shrieks and wails.
Furrball the Freaky Feline AKA Creepy Cat - a manged deranged orange cat with one green eye and one black eye. This cat always wants to rub on your leg and will sneak up on you as you begin to relax somewhere. It totally creeps you out!
Okay, so that is Jeremy’s idea of a scary monster.
Name: Boolean
Description: These mangy, brown and green colored creatures travel in packs and announce their arrival with their attrocious stench. They’re about 6 feet tall with round bodies covered in bristles much like a porcupine. They’re carnivorous, man-eating creatures though they have been known to hunt only for the sport rather than diet. The worst thing about them is that they have a sixth sense that makes them omniscient, knowing where the nearest human is from miles away. To the terror of their victims, they are invisible & smellless until they are within just 2 feet. Over the course of history, in the land of Boosh, people have learned how to kill these animals using a poison dart, which is the only way they can die. Sadly though, Boolean’s have three lives before they are dead for eternity. The one good thing is that Boolean’s are only active during the day and the Boosh people have learned to live nocturnally in order to avoid their terror.
BRANDYR
a sleek black panther capable of going invisible at night. she can chase down any prey because it’s as fast as 1988 Flo Jo. her teeth are as sharp as the blade of an axman’s saw. she has the self healing skin of Wolverine, and the bite of Jaws.
she can also explain how to derive calculus equations and tell stories of love lost and murder mystery. also, she can do the square root (to the nearest tenth) of 183 in her head.
Vermicious Crocoduck.
This feathery beast preys in the low wetlands of the Swamp of Sorrow. Legend has it that if you meet one of these little fellas.. you are immediately drawn to its playful and humorous spirit. Unlike most species of predetory duck .. the Vermicious Crocoduck (the duck with the crocodile beak) loves you to death. It snuggles its warm furry feathers against you.. nestling you close to its side in comfort, then picks the right moment to use its powerful jaws.
[...] Okay, I couldn’t pick just one. [...]
