Who let the dogs out…

Posted by – April 4, 2008

I’ve had some recent pet-sitting jobs. And from these jobs I have learned many things. Sit at my feet, and I will share my wisdom. Just watch out for that dog pee I haven’t cleaned up yet.

  • Dogs are not people. But some people think dogs are people. But I will never treat a dog like a person. Because…see point 1.
  • Neighbors get mad when you let a dog poop in their yard and you forgot to bring something to clean it up with. But they can’t get too mad if you run away first, dragging said dog behind you.
  • It is not fun to brush a dog’s teeth. Especially if the toothpaste is chicken-flavored. Chicken-flavored toothpaste is ungodly.
  • Brandy at 3 a.m. standing in the cold, waiting for a dog to tinkle is not a happy Brandy.
  • Screaming “COME ON DOG, TINKLE” at 3:01 a.m. is not endearing to the neighbors.
  • Seeing a dog drag a stuffed dog into the room with it’s stuffing entrails dragging across the floor is kind of scary. It makes you want to lock your door at night.
  • Formal portraits of dogs wearing pearls weird me out. So does a wall of stuffed dogs that look like said dog. I’m still having nightmares.

  1. I’m guessing the beloved pet that inspired this post is a small dog?

Yeah, that is definitely a small dog. My German Shepherd may THINK she’s a person… but she is not. She does not require monitoring while she goes “tinkle”. And I’m pretty sure she would be MORTIFIED in pearls. HA. (tonight she actually turned her back on me and looked at me disdainfully because I wouldn’t stop working out to play with her. DISDAIN.)

That said… I could use a pet sitter next month :)

who in the world were you pet sitting for? Pearls? I think Muffin would smother me in my sleep. Even though she does think she owns the place and just lets me live here. . . .

I’m with you about never treating a dog like a person. I love animals, especially puppies and kittens. My two cats are my pride and joy, BUT…they are still animals.

My coworker is one such person who owns one such dog. “Toots”, real name Tootsie Roll, is considered a person and treated as such. You can just imagine the conversations I’m forced to participate in since we share an office!
