Science (non) Fiction

Life, science and faith – not necessarily in that order

awwwww

One of my best friends (Frances) from waaay back (we met when I was 10 I think) is getting married this summer and I’m in the wedding – this is the one in CA in July – anyway, Frances posted a link to a few of their engagements pics online. When I first met her (now) fiance a couple years ago, I thought, ‘wow, he’s like a male Frances!’, and that’s still pretty much how I feel about him – they’re adorable together, and this pic is my favorite of the few online – it just looks so much like them, you know? :)

Beach bums…

Topsail Island

This is where I am this weekend – Topsail Island, NC, near the border of NC and SC – beautiful little island, very quiet – staying at a family friend’s house on one of the canals – you can see to both sides of the island from the porch, both beach-front and waterway-side. Mom and I are ‘celebrating’ Mother’s Day (not officially til Dad gets back from Africa) – girls weekend away, time on the dock, reading, talking, eating seafood – good times! :)

I’m working through Lewis’s ‘Mere Christianity’, so I’m sure I’ll have thoughts to share on that at some point in the future… I also bought Brian McLaren’s ‘Generous Orthodoxy’, but haven’t started it yet – wanted to see what all the fuss is about surrounding him. And I still haven’t made it much farther in ‘Til We Have Faces’ – maybe I can only do one CSLewis book at a time…

Now I lay me down to sleep…

So I don’t have pictures, but I am now the owner of a ‘big girl’ queen bed! :) I’ve had the same twin-size day bed since I was about 11 years old (wow, that’s old!), and the time had finally come for an upgrade to something a bit more grown-up. A friend was getting rid of some almost-new mattresses, so I just had to pick up a queen bed frame, which I did the weekend before last – and after taking apart my old bed (which wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be), I set up the new frame and dragged the queen mattress and box spring onto it (which was muuuuuch harder than I thought it would be).

So I’ve now been sleeping in the new bed for a little over a week and I LOVE it! It’s so comfy and big and supportive – I’m now on the hunt for the perfect comforter set for it (since the actual headboard/footboard will have to wait for a while) – til then, I’ve got a cute pink satin comforter ($20 at Ross), which is working just fine for now, especially as it’s getting warmer…

Anyway, it got me thinking about growing up, that this is one more step towards becoming an ‘adult’ (cause, yeah, I just don’t feel like an adult all the time) – I don’t know why, but furniture seems to say ‘grown-up’ to me – and with graduation in sight at the end of the tunnel, growing up seems the inevitable conclusion within the next few years, as I have to start making decisions about actual career stuff, and long-term residency somewhere… scary now, but getting exciting!

Let us entertain you!

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, so this isn’t specifically a result of one event, in case you’re wondering…

Why do churches feel that they have to ‘entertain’ young adults in order to engage them in worship? I’ve been to several services/events designed specifically for ‘young adults’ (typically post-college through maybe early 40s, mostly single), and while many of them have been wonderful times of worship and fellowship and learning through the Word, some have been, well, more like going to a concert than anything else. Do I really need flashing colored light to connect with God in praise?!?! How about fog machines, is having fog essential to my exalting Christ?!?! Or even just the watering down of the gospel and message of Christ – do they not think I can handle the truth?
I understand that we, as a generation of young adults, have grown up in a super-stimulatory world and are working with short attention spans – but it doesn’t seem that catering to that helps us in any way. And I know that for a group of people who grew up on MTV, this might seem to be ‘just the thing’ to keep people engaged – but it’s not, it’s certainly not for me, or for my small group of friends who have talked about this quite a bit. There are certainly people out there for whom this must be amazing, most likely people who have had difficulty with the whole ‘church thing’, thinking that Christians are cut off from the world and not in touch with where they’re coming from (which, to be honest, we often are). But that can’t be the only group we’re trying to reach, right? These services have, for the most part, been not evangelistic in nature (though if that’s an outcome, praise the Lord!), they have been primarily based in leading believers in worship.

I’m just sort of frustrated by the attitude of so many churches, that young adults can’t be thought of as mature, intelligent, thoughtful people who don’t necessarily need all the bells and whistles (and lights and fog :) ) to keep us ‘entertained’ while we worship the true and living God.

Burn, baby, burn!

I think the picture above will be really small, but oh well… it’s my sunburn from this weekend’s beach adventure – that’s only an hour or two in the sun, but I forgot sunscreen, hence the lobster hue… it hurts a bit, but not too bad – hopefully it won’t peel, and I’ll at least get some color out of it when it fades…

I’ve finished ‘Strong Poison’, so I’m on to the next of the Lord Peter love story books – yay! :) And I got some good reading done with other selected books, though I discovered that I don’t really like Brian McLaren’s writing style (either that or I just don’t like what he’s saying) – I want to try one of his other books though, cause I have a couple friends who really like some of his other writings… we’ll see…
