Random thoughts on a stormy night
~ I am currently in a musical movie phase (not that I’ve ever not existed in this phase, but it’s just been especially strong lately) – my local public library has tons of old musicals, so in the last few weeks I’ve watched Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Funny Lady and A Star is Born. Those last two I’d never seen before, so it was fun to watch them for the first time, even if they probably won’t become long-term favorites.
~ I love Facebook. I was never a big fan of MySpace, so I was skeptical of Facebook at first, but it is so much more fun, and much less trashy than MySpace. Such a great way to keep up with old friends!
~ Why are stupid people allowed to reproduce? There was a woman driving down the street yesterday (in a new BMW, no less) with a toddler on her lap! Wha? On what planet is that smart or safe or reasonable?
~ Beth and I saw Waitress today – Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion – really, really good. I don’t think they advertised it quite accurately, since based just on the trailers, I would have thought it was a light romantic comedy – luckily, I knew better, and we weren’t quite as surprised by the heaviness of the movie. Though it was certainly quite hopeful by the end, and very creatively done. And, like Kari said, it definitely made me want to come home and make pies (and I don’t even like pie!).
~ I love thunderstorms, as long as they don’t knock out my power for hours like they did earlier this week – I don’t think this current one will be quite so bad, but I’ve got the flashlight out and ready just in case. In any case, they can be quite beautiful and powerful, if they’re not too dangerous.
I actually didn’t think that Waitress was too far off of what I was expecting, based on the fact that the trailer makes it clear that we’re dealing with infidelity and shows the scene where her friends say they wouldn’t switch places with her. And, oh, how I cried in the hospital scene.
I guess I just didn’t get the whole intense feeling from the trailers that the movie certainly had. I wasn’t sure she was married (the friends scene I just assumed meant that maybe she wasn’t happy with being pregnant – maybe because she was single or the guy had left, etc) and that meant I didn’t really think about infidelity. But admittedly, I didn’t watch the trailer more than once or twice.
)
(and I didn’t actually cry, but I rarely cry in movies – I did certainly feel a tug at my heart every time it looked like she was going to get away and then something would happen to prevent it – and the hospital scene was quite moving. I thought Nathan Fillion was really very good throughout – even without taking into consideration how adorable he is.
How can you not like pie? I can’t even fathom it.
It’s mostly fruit pies I don’t like – I love key lime, pumpkin, lemon meringue – not ‘real’ pies, with the lattice crust and everything – I do love making pies though – I just don’t like cooked fruit for the most part.
(Kari, please back me up here!)
It’s true. I’m not a big pie eater, either, mostly because of cooked fruit. I am learning to like it better these days, though. I would like to try to make strawberry pie.
Or strawberry chocolate pie!
Ooooh, I could get behind a strawberry chocolate pie!
Really, it’s mostly cherry and apple pie that I don’t like (and maybe blueberry) – of course the most common kinds – something about the squishy-ness of the fruit :shudder:
(bizarrely, I do like baked apples – whole, cored apples baked with brown sugar/honey and chopped nuts – yummy!)
