Life, science and faith – not necessarily in that order

Adventure Island

So we’re at the beach for the week this week, and I’m plugged in to veeeery slow dial-up here at Topsail Island. We’re staying at a friend’s vacation house (fabulous to have friends with nice things :) ), and they have all kinds of fun toys that they let us borrow. So today Matthew and I took the ocean kayaks out of the canal (where the house is situated) and into the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway! And while I had a moment of freaked-out-ness right before I got into the boat (I mean, it’s a tiny little boat, and even though you don’t get zipped into these ones, they’re still tippy and low-riding), it was one of the coolest things I’ve done in a long while. We probably rowed maybe 1-1.5 miles total, up the inside of the island and then back. Along the way we saw two beautiful herons (I think Great Blues), both of which stuck around long enough for us to get pretty close before flying away (very gracefully). And then, as we were getting close to the point where we’d decided to turn around, I saw what I at first thought were birds sitting on the water maybe a hundred feet ahead of me. After staring at the waves for a couple seconds, I realized they were fins!!! Dolphin fins!!!!! There were at least 2, maybe 3 dolphins swimming lazily up ahead of us, periodically coming up to the surface in that arch that lets you see their fin and silvery back. It was soooo awesome! I really wished then that I’d brought my camera, but I just wasn’t sure enough that I wouldn’t tip the first time out. :) We’re planning on going back out if the weather cooperates later this week (there’s some hurricane aftermath coming through that’s supposed to bring us some rain tomorrow and Thursday).

I came into dallas with the bright lights on my mind

OK, since Kari asked for it, and I clearly need to tell a slightly more happy tale of my travels, I will here recount the events that occured while waiting for my connecting flight in Dallas/Fort Worth on the way to California (before any of the aforementioned medical issues arose).

So I was sitting at my gate in the lovely DFW airport, waiting through a long layover on a Wednesday afternoon. Now the airport had wireless internet, but I had to pay, and I was initially too cheap to pay, so I was occupying myself with reading and people-watching. And I began to notice that all around me there were a lot of women, more than one would normally see in proportion to the number of men. And while there were a lot of variations in the size, shape, ethnicities and age of these women, they all seemed to have one thing in common – they were all carrying at least one large, garishly pink MARY KAY bags! And as I looked closer at the women, I noticed that many of them were wearing lapel pins for MK, and many had multiple bags (apparently from the different generations of MK).

Now what you’ll notice I’m not saying is that all of these women had stunning makeup, makeup that was so natural that you could barely tell they were wearing any – oh no, my friends, that was not the case. These women were all around me, and while I was not really looking like a million bucks myself, there were very few of them that I would have wanted advising me about the proper colors/application of makeup. I haven’t seen that much poorly applied makeup since high school, and these women were WAY out of high school. (And why are there no male MK salespeople? is it kinda like having a male OBGYN?)

Apparently, there was a conference/meeting in Dallas that had just finished up, and they were all scattering back home across the country, so several of them ended up on my flight to CA. And on that flight, while I was waiting in the aisle of the plane to use the lavatory (trying to avoid getting fussed at by the flight attendants), there were two of them comparing notes in the seats in front of me while I was standing there. And I kept getting evil looks from one of them, like she thought I was going to steal her trade secrets of mass marketing to the stay-at-home mom population or world domination through excessive application of eye shadow. That’s the real reason I was on that plane, folks!

(oh, and when I got on my last flight of this trip, back to NC, I was putting my bag in the overhead compartment, and what was there next to the empty space for my bookbag? that’s right, a pink MARY KAY bag! I swear, they’re stalking me!)

Random thoughts while traveling…

I’ll post a more thorough story of my past almost two weeks of traveling (which has been mostly, well let’s just say, less than fun), but I just wanted to let you know that I’m still alive :)

~ Frances and Jonathan are married! The wedding was lovely (HOT – San Francisco at 100+ heat with no A/C = unhappy wedding party), they took a short mini-honeymoon til they take their real one in the fall (Europe!). I’ll link to pictures once I get some (I didn’t take any, due mostly to the aforementioned ‘less than fun-ness’ of the trip) – I’m glad I was there to see them get married.

~ I HATE United Airlines! Every time I’ve flown with them in the past year, they’ve lost and/or damaged my luggage on at least one leg of my trip with them :( This time, I booked through USAirways, but they put me on United for my flight to/from MT, and what happened when I arrived Sunday night in Bozeman? That’s right, no luggage waiting for me :( Not only that, but the power had gone out at the (tiny) airport, so it took almost an hour to get anyone to report my missing bags to – grrrrr. They did finally bring my bags to the motel, but it was almost midnight and I was not happy. Poo on United!

~ I LOVE American Airlines – really nice people, you get a whole can of soda/juice when they serve beverages :) (and they recycle the cans – knew you’d appreciate that, Dawn), and they’ve been WAY better than United about customer service, which came in handy today since I missed my connection in Dallas due to my first flight from CA being about 25 minutes late – so I’m waiting in the Dallas/Fort Worth airport for a while, but at least it’s only a couple hours.

~ I have not seen large parts of the United States – I realized as I was flying over especially the southwest, that I haven’t really seen much of that part of the country, and I’d like to at some point. And why are some fields planted in a circle pattern? I swear, looking down from the airplane, it was like looking down at crop circles or something – very wierd.

More fully updated story coming soon – maybe once I recover a bit…

I’m off!

I’m heading out from the Charlotte airport tomorrow, flying through Dallas/Fort Worth and ending up in San Francisco, CA. I’ll be there just in time for the wedding festivities to begin apparently, starting with ice skating, dinner and potentially bowling with the bridesmaids (my kind of ‘bachelorette party’ :) ) on Thursday. Manicures and pedicures with the girls on Friday, following by the rehearsal/dinner. Then hair appointments (after which I will hopefully not resemble the ‘Steel Magnolias’ character I looked like after the last wedding I had my hair done for  ) Saturday morning, before or after a wedding breakfast (have they always done these?), culminating in the wedding mass Saturday afternoon, following by a reception elsewhere (can’t remember where – hope someone is driving me…). I’ve been so blessed in the relationships of my closest friends – that is, I love all the guys my girlfriends have ended up with – and that makes the weddings so much easier, knowing that I can go into the wedding (and often participate as part of the wedding party) in full support of their relationship. And this wedding is no exception to that. (It was also be my first big Catholic wedding, which I’m very excited about!)

All of that to say that as of tomorrow I will be here:

To see these two wonderful people commit their lives to one another:

In this lovely church:

After all of that wedding craziness, I’ll be here for a week-long conference at Montana State University on bacterial biofilms (I’m psyched about it!):
MSU

I’m rooming with two other girls from the department here at this lovely establishment (which is walking distance from the university, or so I’m told):
motel

The motel does have internet access, so I should be able to check in periodically – I thought we’d have time to go see Yellowstone National Park or something, but it looks like our time is pretty well taken up with conference stuff :( Hopefully I’ll be able to see something, like the Grand Tetons (which always makes me think of ‘That 70s Show’ and Kelso saying one of the girls had on a tube top and it was like ‘the Grand Tetons… in a tube top’ )

Maybe I’ll check in from the airports tomorrow – so no scary flying messages again from any of you engineers out there, ok? ;)

Random thoughts from Florida…

Well, I’m back in NC, but here are some random thoughts from my time in the Sunshine State this past week:

~ There were altogether TOOOOO many lycra/spandex/sequin/tube-top-wearing people in Orlando – it was hard to remember that just because I was there for work, didn’t mean everyone else withint a 30-mile radius wasn’t there for vacation – but when did being on vacation mean you’re exempt from just basic common sense? I mean, women over the age of say, 60, should not wear tube tops

~ I saw a billboard on the way to the airport today – guess what it was advertising? Cars? Cell phones? Strip joints? Guess again – it was an ad for this - yes, that’s right, vasectomies! That’s how much the state cares about its residents! :)

~ Apparently there’s a big trend in the scientific community for men to have long hair – who knew that was back in? (or maybe it never really went away with scientists?)

~ Also, I think every person over the age of 60 in the greater Orlando area was working at the Convention Center this week – seriously, I didn’t see one CC employee who didn’t look like they didn’t have several grandkids – and there were hundreds of them, everywhere!

OK, I think that’s enough for now… I might think of more later on…

We’re going on safari to the islands this year

This weekend, I’m heading to Topsail Island for a week of vacation with the family. Given how much time all of us have had to take off in the last few weeks with all the chaos, we have all tossed around the idea of not going after all – but I think we all came to the conclusion that we needed the time off now more than ever. So we’ll be hanging out at Liza and Bruce’s canal-side house, on a very quiet island – and all the kids should be back in school, so there should be lots of peace and quiet :) I’ve decided that I don’t even care if it rains, cause I would love to just sit and read and nap and laugh and watch movies – though I will certainly be taking lots of walks on the beach if it’s nice! I will take my camera and strive to take more pictures than I usually do (which is to say, take more than none). Until I do, here’s a pic of the island so you can picture me in your mind :)

Enough drama for you?

Would it be enough to tell you that in the last two weeks I’ve been in two different urgent care centers in two different states? or that I’ve seen over 7 different medical professionals in the same time? or that I’ve had my luggage lost and hotel reservations misplaced? no? you want more? ok…well…

I arrived in California, raring to go for the last part of Wedding Week 2006, including on Thursday an almost full-day bachelorette party walking around downtown San Francisco, ice skating, and eating pizza late into the night. By the end of that, I ended up in a lot of pain and ended up in the urgent care center the next morning, having been diagnosed with a cyst that needed to be dealt with (while everyone else got their nails done, no less!). The rehearsal and rehearsal dinner that night were lovely, and after another visit to urgent care the following morning, and hair appointments, and pictures in 100+ heat outside and in the church (with NO A/C!), Frances and Jonathan were joined in marriage in a beautiful service.

The reception was air-conditioned luckily, and I had lots of bubbly apple juice, and the music was great, and I took it easy with no dancing til the very end, due to the aforementioned health issues. But one of the groomsmen asked me to dance for the last dance, and I figured, ‘what harm could I do in 3 minutes on the dance floor?’ – well, apparently a lot, cause as he (the groom’s twin brother, by the way) went to dip me at the end, my shoes slipped, and, well, we both ended up on the floor, but only after I heard a very loud, very ominous ‘pop’ from my left knee. It immediately swelled up to about 3 times its normal size, and was extremely difficult to handle putting weight on it. Since I was already going to the urgent care place the next morning anyway, they XRayed the knee, found nothing broken, but it was too swollen for them to tell anything about what was wrong. So I ended up with a knee immobilizer (brace) and crutches, a dash to pick up a refill prescription for pain meds, and almost didn’t make my flight out of SF to go to Montana for the conference at MSU.

Upon arrival in Bozeman MT, my bags were not on my flight (the power was also out in the airport – are you starting to see a pattern here?) – they didn’t arrive at the motel til almost midnight (the motel is a whole other story :) ). Basically, I had to go to an urgent care center in Bozeman every day I was there until the last day of the conference, which was not made any easier by the fact that I was either on crutches or in a brace the whole time. The conference ended up being quite different than we expected, but still somewhat helpful I hope.

On the way back, I had to stop over in San Francisco, and after a debacle with hotel reservations, I finally had a room for the night and got in bed early, cause I had to be at the airport at 5am the next day. That flight left late, which made me miss my connection in Dallas and delayed my arrival in NC by 3 hours.

Now that I’m back, I’ve finally been to an orthpedic surgeon, who thinks that I’ve torn a meniscus (which is better than tearing a ligament) – so I had an MRI tonight to see the tear, and I’ll talk to

Lessons learned:

~ I hate United, and I love American

~ Sometime in my life, I WILL fly first class!

~ As a friend mentioned when I recounted the whole story to her, ‘you don’t normally attract this amount of drama’, and I though ‘I KNOW!’ – I try to avoid drama like crazy, but this trip it seemed to be stalking me.

~ As messy as things were, God was clearly involved, as I had great medical care, and the urgent care centers were always within a couple blocks of my hotel at the time.

~ I realized how much I like to be in control of every part of my life, and given how impossible me being in control was on this trip, I had a really hard time – I didn’t have a car, or any control over my schedule, and I was in a different time zone so getting a hold of people back home was hard – it really forced me to rely on the ‘kindness of strangers’ (or people I knew) – and as much as I hate to admit that I need help, people really came through to help me through the whole trip – whether it was the bridesmaid’s mom who drove me around and picked up gauze at the drugstore (Thanks Maggie and Kathy!), or the family friend who picked up a backpack and various assorted pharmacy stuff before my flight out of CA, or just people being concerned about my wellbeing after hearing what was going on. I don’t know if it will be any easier next time I need to let go and let others help me, but I know I need to learn to accept help from the people I love. As my mom said while this whole thing was going on, I need to be willing to accept the ministry of others in my life. So, while I hope that I won’t need to do it anytime soon, I will hopefully be more open to receiving that help when the time comes.

Let’s hear it for … airport wireless internet!

Whoohoo! Love the wireless internet at Charlotte Douglas Int’l Airport! I’ve got to leave for my gate in a minute, but maybe I’ll be able to check in once I get to Dallas/Fort Worth, since my layover there is about 2 hours. Being here reminds me that traveling during the week is much different than on the weekends – I’m surrounded by business people (mostly men) in the ‘corporate area’ (where the wireless is), instead of mostly families and vacationing couples. And the fun piano guy that was here on my last trip (to Orlando) is not playing today :(

I’m off!

I’m a big kid now!

So the trip to Florida for my first big national meeting was a success!
The poster session went really well – everyone was really nice and receptive to the ideas, and most everyone said something like ‘well done’ or ‘good job’ after I’d walked them through the data – it felt really comfortable, which is a first for me, I’m usually really awkward talking about my work, esp with people who know so much more than I do about the field… but it was good, and generated some good discussion/ideas to think about.

And I got to meet some great people – my boss’s old boss (like my ‘grandfather’ in the science world  ), several of his old students (which was great, cause we talk about them all the time and I’d never met them – and they were awesome!), other famous people in the world of my research… so a good trip altogether… I’m still glad it’s over, as it was kinda stressful and exhausting (that’s a lot of lectures to attend all day starting at 8am) – but it was definitely worth it, and I’m kinda excited about spending some time this summer looking at post-docs and other opportunities for post-PhD work!

And I’m here

I’ve arrived, in the land of sun and sand and animated creatures – my hotel is pretty nice (though they put me in a smoking room, which I’m not too happy about :( ), lots of amenities (fitness center, pool, laundry room, etc) and a bit closer to the convention center than I figured, which is good considering how incredibly HOT it is here, even at 5pm! Toasty! We’ll be inside during the hottest parts of the day, inside this incredibly cool-looking convention center:

Orange County Convention Center

And there’s this adorable pink castle hotel next door (called ‘The Castle:) ) – wish I’d thought to book my room there…

The trip was pretty uneventful, though I did see a girl getting taken off to the side after a drug-sniffing dog got VERY happy sniffing her bag – and it was funny how I could pick out several other people going to the same convention based on the long poster tubes they were all carrying on the plane – plus us science geeks can always sense each other – it’s a gift

I’m off to look through the program for the convention, so I can plan what I want to attend when during the week – still open for suggestions for fun things to do in Orlando (keeping in mind I won’t have a car or too much to spend on it)…
