compulsive compartmentalization

There is no such thing on earth as an uninteresting subject; the only thing that can exist is an uninterested person. - G.K. Chesterton

WSJ: Researching Athiesm and Irrationality

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Here’s fascinating article from the Wall Street Journal website.

After spending last year in an ongoing debate via email with a “new atheist,” I found this article pretty interesting. Apparently studies show that atheists are far more likely to believe in superstition and pseudoscience than Christians.

sharia in the UK

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

I’m generally not one to spout off here about the politics of other countries (or even my own country for that matter….at least not here.) But, sometimes things happen that truly worry me about the future of my own country and western civilization as a whole. The fact that Britain has officially sanctioned Sharia [...]

There’s a show on the Noggin network (a station that unfortunately has my nephew in its heroine-like grasp) that featured its cast of anthropomorphized characters having their own Olympics. The tiger demonstrated the most athletic prowess (Hmmm…tigers are Asian. What are they trying to say?) The tiger however was very arrogant in [...]

on those who abuse goodwill

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Let’s talk briefly on those people who ruin things for everybody. One such person has forced me, for example, to stop doing free sketches when I’m out and about at different events. If a man should come up and request four sketches, each one for a specific member of his family, and [...]

Today I came across an interesting article about brain activity and vegetative states. Just before my dad died, he was unconscious and moved to an intensive care unit, where after less than 24 hours a doctor we had never seen before walks in a says, rather nonchalantly, that we should just pull the [...]

things that haunt me #4

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Can we truly expect something to be true of a community of believer (”church”) that isn’t true of ourselves individually? When Acts 2 talks of the church being “devoted to the apostles teaching, to the fellowship and the breaking of bread, and to prayer,” can we expect to just avoid making spending significant time [...]

Recently I read C.S. Lewis’ Surprised by Joy, the autobiography of his early life up until his conversion from atheism to Christianity around the age of 30. As I mentioned to several people, this book made everything in my life seem to me to be utterly trivial. Whereas my childhood was filled with [...]

New vs Old

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

For the last 4 months I’ve been in an ongoing email-debate with someone who could be described as what’s been dubbed the “New Atheist.” The newness of their atheism isn’t their argument but their attitude. The public faces of this branch of atheism comes from those such as Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, and [...]

the pursuit of relative wealth

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

My last post got me to thinking about the pursuit of wealth. Paul tells us that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. That many who want to get wealthy peirce themselves with many griefs. Proverbs speaks to those wearing themselves out to get rich, that they [...]

What’s wrong with this statement?

There is no absolute truth*.

the delusion of new athiesm

Monday, February 26th, 2007

I was thinking about atheism the other day (I don’t care about the Oscars, so I guess this took its place in my brain.) Specifically what’s been termed the “new atheism” as espoused by Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and the like. In case you’re not familiar with the term, their peculiar brand of atheism [...]

Sermon thoughts: generosity and faith promise

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Note: So this is how I work through things. I have to think and write and verbally process. I could be wrong, but it’s not going to be because I’m not working through the issues.
I know I have a tendency to post on the things that don’t sit well with me. I’m [...]

Time magazine debate

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

I was recently reading the Time magazine debate between Atheist crusader Dr. Richard Dawkins and Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, and also a professed Christian. Among the exchanges between them, two things stood out as being particularly bad reasoning on Dawkins part (for the record, I didn’t [...]

One last thought about the Jehovah Witnesses that came to my door and I’ll be done with it. It dawned on me in the shower yesterday that I missed a golden opportunity to make my point, and I’ll definitely be looking for the opportunity to make it next time…feel free to use it in [...]

Knock knock knockin’ on heaven’s door

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Yesterday I had the privilege of being visited by two fine representatives from the Jehovah Witnesses. I spent about 45 minutes talking with an older gentleman and his son (who was probably in his early twenties) as they slowly became more and more agitated. In fact, the older guy eventually started winding the [...]

Statement 2, and a God who tries

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

A few people said that statement 2 reveals a lack of desire to plant churches. That’s not something I’m going to disagree with, necessarily (I don’t know that it’s occurred to them as an option) instead I’m going to point out the philosophical problem that seems to exist beneath the surface of the statement.
2) [...]

Statement 1 and special revelation

Monday, December 11th, 2006

In my last post, I had mentioned two brief statments that seem to have problems associated with them. I wanted to see what other people thought of them even though I’m lifting them somewhat out of context. So let me give you a little more information and the sense I always get when [...]
