This weekend, Philip and I attacked our house. We’re painting the trim and the deck - hopefully before any snow
. The house is starting to look completely different. The siding is a light cream color and the trim was a yellowish shade - painted forty years ago. The deck was stained an opaque green. Phil and I picked out a dark, dark brown that is now the color of our trim, and will soon be the color of our deck. It was so satisfying to power wash the deck yesterday of forty years of scum, stain, and mold. We also have cedar clapboards on either side of our front door that had forty years of mold accumulated on the bottom half from snow and dripping water. I power washed these and it was incredable - the mold just streamed right off leaving behind beautiful new-looking clapboards. The front of the house is almost done. The brown looks great. It really makes the cream colored siding pop. It also makes it look really clean. I can’t wait to get the deck done. Then, we have to do the back and sides of the house. The back is definitely going to be the scariest. The deck off the back wobbles - not the most comforting thing to prop a ladder on. We’re not sure if we’ll get to both sides of the house this year. The most important was the front and back, not just because of aesthetics, but because the trim is completley stripped of paint now and has no protection. Each year, the unprotected wood becomes more and more rotten. This house may have charm, but it’s also very old and falling apart!
Painting is on my mind now. I love to paint, and now I’m eyeing the indoors for some projects. Our dowstairs is awash with green. It was decorated (previous to us) in a country style with way too much dark green. The living room really needs a change. I just have to figure out what color would work well with our furniture and bring everything together. All of the trim is natural wood - some of it from the original 1830’s house. Our couches are brown, a taupish color, and a cream color - so I think painting the walls in that popular mix of off-whitish brown would not go well with the couches. I’d like a little color, but we’ll see. It needs to be able to not clash too much with the rest of the green decor downstairs until I can repaint those rooms. Oh, the baseboards of the living room are also dark green - so whatever color I pick has to go with them. The hardest thing to paint in the living room will probably be the built in shelves on either side of the fireplaced. They are recessed into the wall. The shelves and trim around the edges are wood - all nailed in. But the wall behind the shelves and the sides is painted. Should be a fun project!

Just got an email from an elder - saying that there have been complaints that the church is too messy after our Tuesday night youth group. I say “WOOHOO! The church is being used!”

Hurray! The homeschooler that I teach History and English to just got her latest achievement test scores in. She went up almost four grade levels in language mechanics since her last test last summer. I’m just so glad that her grade level didn’t go down or stay the same… at least now it feels like all those hours wrestling through grammar were worth it!

On the occasion of my 23rd birthday, I just want to express how truly blessed I feel. I’ve had some bum birthdays in the past, but this one was really special. Two trips to the post office today resulted in many birthday cards, I had emails from both my family and Philip’s family, and several phone calls. Last night was a rough night, for many reasons, and I pretty much cried myself to sleep after an exhausting evening of soul searching, ministry evaluation, and simply crying out to God. I woke up this morning to a beautiful sunny day, two wonderful children, an incredible husband, and a plethora of family and friends extending their arms in love. Thank you. You have all been an encouragment in your own ways and have helped to lift up the weary.

I actually think Seámus is winning this one - he’s one tough cookie.
