Thanksgiving Plans

This year, we’re not able to go anywhere for Thanksgiving… but yay! I got into a great art show that I’m really excited about the weekend after Thanksgiving. It wasn’t cheap to reserve a spot, but I should make up for the cost pretty easily. It’s a two day show in Augusta, Maine at the civic center. Hopefully since it costs a pretty penny to exhibit, there will be a higher quality of artists than your standard craft show fare. … and people will come prepared to spend some money - maybe for Christmas presents. That’s one of the frustrating thing about doing outdoor shows - they’re always contingent on the weather and people often come just to walk around, not to buy. (I used to be one of the walkers - hee hee - now I see it from the point of a vender who is just silently pleading “pleeeeease come look at my stuff!”)

I’m working on a couple of large pieces for this show. It will be interesting to see if there are any takers.

Here’s a picture of one of my larger pieces in progress (it’s not grouted yet). If you’re familiar with Maine and Moosehead Lake, you’ll hopefully recognize Mt. Kineo. I’ve also posted a picture below of Mt. Kineo - it’s a bit more up-close than my mosaic, but you get the idea.

I think your mosaics are great! I would love to be able to do something artistic and try to sell it, but I haven’t figured out what yet. I am experimenting with paper mache (sp?) a little. Your mosaics are inspiring though. There is a stainglass store nearby where I could get glass pieces for free. I may have to give it a try sometime. I would love to hear how the show goes. Good luck!

Christiana: thanks!

Amy: I love doing mosaics - it’s very relaxing and therapeutic. There’s a link on my side-bar for a mosaic & stained glass forum that I belong to - they have some very useful threads and friendly people ready to help you out if you’d like to have a go at it. And if you have free glass pieces… lucky duck! I also have fond (hah!) memories of paper mache. My husband and I constructed Smaug for “The Hobbit”, which I directed two years ago. We made such a mess! I think our neighbors especially thought we were nuts when we dragged out all these huge sections of dragon to paint on our front lawn. What do you like to paper mache?

That new piece is stunning, Hannah. I so knew it was Mt. Kineo even before I scrolled down to the photo.

Roger, I might just have to “stick-whack” you all the way from Greenville to Brewer if you don’t watch out

Hannah,
So far I haven’t really done much except play around with the kids. We made apples last month and I have done the pinata thing :-). In school we made puppets once. I really enjoyed making the mess and I love painting. I found a site online that showed how to make very cute penguins using skinny balloons for the base. We’ll see. My kids keep me so busy it is very hard to stay focused on projects. (4 under 7 yrs. and this is my first year of homeschooling!) Thanks for pointing out the forum, I can see how it could be really helpful.
