Hair

So I’m trying to get up the nerve again to cut my hair. I really, really, really want a change. The problem is four years ago I got the worst cut of my life — and it was short. So now, everytime I think about a short hair cut, that comes to mind. But I think I’m brave enough now to give it another go. Maybe I’ll try to get it cut on Sunday when we are out shopping.

Phil still needs convincing…

Here’s a picture of what I’d like:

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Life Goes On

After two and a half weeks, Phil is finally back at work. It may only be a day or so (we’re supposed to have some nasty weather coming in), but it’s still something. I think he was going stir-crazy being in the house all day.

On Monday, we put in his application to Eastern Maine Community College for the electrician’s program, which consists of mostly night and online classes. I hope our Fafsa meets the deadline - we cut it quite close. We mailed it in on Saturday, and it has to be received by May 1st for the Maine deadline. Hopefully he’ll start in the fall. He’ll have at least two years of classes, and then he’ll need to find an electrian to apprentice with for a few years. After that, he’ll be able to put out his own shingle.

On the home front, I think the kids enjoyed having their daddy around quite a bit. Éva is certainly growing up… it seems as if she’s gone from two to teenager in her attitude overnight! Seámus continues to be a darling, squeezable, happy little boy who’s ready to laugh at anything and loves his daddy, crackers, naps, and pulling down the fireplace screen (we’ve had some close calls with him on this one!).

I think one of my biggest challenges with the kids right now is going to church. It’s such a struggle to lug everyone to church 45 minutes away. Every week, I have to explain to the nursery people about Éva’s allergies - and I can never remember if I’ve told them before (it’s a rotating schedule, so it always seems as if there are different people in there). Seámus is starting to get to the age where he can’t sleep through the service anymore, but there aren’t any kids his age in the nursery. Most of the kids in the nursery are two year old girls… great for Éva… not so great for Seámus. I also struggle with what to do with Éva. Personally, we’d like to keep Éva upstairs until the last song before the sermon and then take her downstairs when they dismiss children’s church. This doesn’t seem to be the philosophy of the church we are attending however, and there are no other young children in the service. They stay downstairs the whole time. I hate being a distraction, so we’re sturggling with what to do. We really don’t want Éva to connect “church” with just a playtime. I know some might say she’s too young to understand, but she’s really not. She knows 60+ questions in her children’s catechism and she sings the doxology every week at church louder than the elders. I’d like to have our family worship together. Maybe she doesn’t completly understand everything, but I’d rather not have her just play until she’s five years old and then just suddenly have her somehow understand that church is more than a social event with her friends.

I suppose it wouldn’t be that bad, but we don’t feel settled in at the church yet, so we still feel kind of up in the air. We’d like to go to a reformed church, but that just doesn’t seem possible where we are living. We’re still struggling to find a church fit.

Well, Phil was supposed to start work today, but unfortunately the weather isn’t cooperating. Mucho rain… in fact, I woke up at six a.m. this morning to the first thunder of the season.

So instead, he spent the morning on the phone with the IRS. Nobody likes dealing with these people - what a horrible job. Anyway, last week we got a letter from them. You can imagine how my heart leapt when I saw the return address. I opened it up, and was informed that they had found a minor mistake in on our child tax credit section that had effected our return just a bit. We went over and over and over the section they had said was wrong and could not find the mistake. We computed our figures backwards and forwards and upside-down. Still no mistake. So this morning, Phil called them up to find out where they thought the error was. We didn’t want to dispute the error, just to understand the mistake.

Well, after a long time on the phone, Phil finally got somewhere. It appears that perhaps the IRS did not include my business income (albeit a very small income) in their figure for our earned income, whereas turbotax did. Regardless, it’s not worth it to dispute the claim, but still frustrating none-the-less. I hope this doesn’t happen again next year. What a pain.
