An embarassing thing
Today at Wal-Mart, I was trying to reach the Granny Smith apples, but they were on the top flat of a table that was slanted away from me. I stood on my tiptoes straining for them, but they remained just beyond my reach. I glanced around for the produce guy or something to stand on, but no solution was presenting itself. So I just stood there for a minute trying to figure out what in the world I was going to do.
Luckily, a tallish woman dressed in red pushed her cart by me just at that time, and I turned to her and said, “You’re tall. Could you possibly reach the Granny Smith apples for me?” We laughed as she helped me pick out three or four apples, and I told her that any time she needed something from a bottom shelf, she could give me a call.
I have had to ask tall men for help before at the grocery store, when the Rice-a-Roni is all the way in the back on the top shelf or something. I usually ask men who are with their wives/girlfriends, so it’s clear I’m not hitting on them and that I just need some help. But I’ve never needed help in produce before. I have reached a new low. (Insert your own short joke here.)

Produce from Wal-Mart. You are a brave women. They must of looked fresher than fresh becasue thats usually the only way I bought produce from there. Otherwise, Wal-Mart boxed items are the way to go.

Yes, we are careful about the Wal-Mart produce we buy. The apples haven’t been great lately, but the tall lady helped me find some good ones.
Scott, you know, the only apples I really like are Granny Smith. I haven’t had Golden Delicious in a long time, but I don’t like red apples at all, because they tend to be softer. And I like my apples a bit tart.

We find the produce at Wal*Mart, and especially Sam’s Club, to be too low quality for us to buy.

If you guys would like to make a donation into the Mike and Kari grocery fund, we would be thrilled to stop shopping at Wal-Mart. When we can afford otherwise, Wal-Mart will be the first thing to go.

I didn’t mean it in a snippy way. I am just saying . . . we check the ads and everything, but we still have to get most of our stuff at Wal-Mart. Generally the produce is better elsewhere, but we get by.

hey, i shop at walmart. maybe y’all think i’m slumming it, but i’m saving some mula. walmart grocery shoppers unite!
and sometimes the apples i want are on the top shelf, which is slanted away from you. yeah, what’s up with that? so sometimes i have to stretch. good thing i have long arms.

Oh dont get me wrong Kari. In Alabama, most of my stuff came from Wal Mart. Actucally, 98% if it came from there.

As one who is always analyzing how to get things off of high shelves, I can feel your pain.
I too have jumped. And asked. And used makeshift tools (like boxes) to knock off what I really want. Short people learn to be creative. And we know how to humble our short selves and ask for help. But next time, I’ll remember your offer to help with the lower shelves. 
I’ll start using that line too.
