Pants = Love
Let’s talk about black pants. Five (FIVE!) years ago, I went into Lerner/NY and Co./whatever that place is called and bought the perfect pair of black pants. For, I don’t know, $30. Maybe $40. They are polyester, so I don’t have to iron them, and I can wear them in all but the coldest days of winter (and this is the South, y’all, so I am saying I can wear them all year long). I can wash them myself. They keep their crease. They’re flattering. I am still wearing them, five years later. I wear them every week. In the summer, I usually wear them twice a week! It’s possible that was the greatest $30 I have ever spent, wardrobe-wise.
But, you guys, these pants, they cannot last forever. And I have exactly zero other pairs of work-appropriate all-season black pants that can replace them. What am I going to do? Black pants are a necessity!
Now, maybe I should take back the “perfect†bit, because I always have to wear these pants with flats. Which is fine. But probably the “perfect†pair would be just a tiny bit longer, so they could be worn with either flats or low heels. But that is such a minor detail when you have loved and been loved by a pair of pants for five years, don’t you think?
(Now that I have denounced the pants in this way, they are probably going to fall apart. Right now. While I’m sitting in this chair. You betray the pants, the pants will get their revenge.)
Regardless of the future of these pants, a girl really ought to own more than one pair of black pants. It’s part of the Girl Code. I am failing as a woman. So, I need some new black pants. I need them to be as great as the ones I have on right now. And I hate shopping with the fire of ten thousand suns. So, I declare that this spring and summer I will be journeying on The Quest for the Perfect Black Pants: 2007 Edition. (The only way to get through the worst kind of shopping - shopping with a goal already in mind - is to make it sound like an epic journey. One day songs will be written about this quest.) I will let you know how it goes. And if you have any suggestions, I could really use them.

this sounds like toy story, there’s nothing wrong with the original black pants, but you have your doubts about them and want to replace them by fancy new black pants. i will never understand that, i mean, andy LOVED woody, why did his parents think buzz would be a better toy?

Go back to NY&Co! All my work pants are from there, they are the bestest. AND you should sign up for their mailing list because they send out coupons, like $30 off if you spend $75. Then for your 40ish dollars, you can get TWO PAIRS OF PANTS. It’s what shopping will be like in heaven. Susan can back me up on this.

I know what you mean. I have this stretchy side-zip pair of Express pants. Black. Bought the on eBay more than 5 years ago. Sadly, they’ve worn out. Can’t find a pair to replace them. Can’t find a pair of khakis either. What’s wrong with pants these days? I’ve looked everywhere. Let us know what you find…

Kari, I couldn’t find black pants that I liked/were in my price ranged/fit me right for the LONGEST time, you have NO idea. I would look every time I went shopping anyplace, for sev. years. My mother in law came into town about a month ago, and insisted on buying me something. So we went on an adventure throughout the ENTIRE mall to find black pants for me. Lets see….we looked at every department store in the entire mall, Ny & Co, Express, Ann Taylor, and about at least five other places I don’t remember …finally going to The Limited, which I had tried before with no luck. I pulled, literally, every style of black pants from the entire store into the dressing room with me. This was about 10 pairs of black pants (not kidding.) FINALLY one of the pair from the limited worked! YAY! I have yet to get them altered for length (I am too short for Regulars and too tall for Shorts), but I was and am SO excited about finding my black pants. They are such an essential, and I looked for so long for such a long time. So I would suggest looking at Limited, and take every style and every variation of every style into the dressing room with you. It worked for me! Happy black-pants-hunting! Keep us posted.

I misspoke. I got the pants at Express, not the Limited.

Thanks! I have never bought pants from either of those places, so I’ll put them on my list.
