Raking Rocks

We woke to a beautiful Saturday morning here in Greenville, Maine. This was the first morning (since the ice broke) that there was no morning wind, and so the now-melted waters were completely still. I only realized this when I looked out the window at breakfast and saw the reflection of the trees and mountains in the water! It always takes my breath away. Remember, we don’t have to drive anywhere or even walk anywhere to see this view… this is Hannah and Philip’s view from the large windows on the back of their house.

So, what does one do on such a beautiful day? We don boots and jackets and go out to do yard work! In most parts of the country the autumn leaves must be raked out of yards. Not so in Maine! Here, the wind takes care of that for everyone (Mark would love that). But, so as not to cause an disturbance in the delicate balance of fairness in the world, residents of Maine are required to get out with their rakes in the spring and rake rocks. Hannah and Philip live on dirt/gravel roads. In the winter the plowing pushes many rocks onto the lawns and gardens. I’m not talking just on the edge of the road… we’re got rocks that are 20 feet or more into the property. At the beginning of snow season you never know how much snow you will have to pile up, so they start pushing the piles pretty far off the road, to leave room for later blizzards and storms.

Éva and Seámus pitched in and helped (for a while).

But what exactly should one do with all these rocks (other than dump them back into the road)? You had to ask?

That has to be your best rock-balancing creation yet! How big are the base rocks? It’s hard to get perspective. And such a great setting for the sculpture; a perfectly-framed photo.

[...] Here in Philly we rake leaves in the fall. What do they do in spring up in Greenville, Maine? Why, rake rocks, of course! Oh, but it is what my creative wife does with those rocks that is today’s “must see” blog post! Published in: Family & Friends | on April 22nd, 2006 Popularity: unranked | [...]

This is not surprising and mildly reassuring. And beautiful. Like the sun rising each day.
