Unchanging God

Published by philber under general, theology

From the former SBTS of the Derek Webb Message Board with regard to passages of Scripture where God “changes his mind”:

God is:

1. Ontologically immutable.
2. Ethically immutable.
3. Relationally mutable.

1 and 2 demand 3.

The texts that speak of God’s changing his mind, repenting, etc., are referring to #3, to the result of God’s consistency in applying His holy, immutable, and conditional promises, which are grounded in His character, to human beings who may change from deserving his wrath to obtaining his grace.

This change from deserving wrath to obtaining grace is anthropomorphically described as a change of God’s mind, when in reality, it is the appropriate application of God’s immutable character and unchangeable mind to human beings who change in their attitudes, and actions, and in their relation to Him.
