mmm, beef stew

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

I try to cook something new every single week. Beef stew is on the menue for this week. This is one of Mike’s favorite meals so I am proud to cook it for him. I mostly try to stick to cooking chicken since it is better than red meat. For the past few weeks I have been cooking a lot of chili for some reason. We have been eating it so fast. I think that it is a great meal to eat during the middle of winter. It just warms you right up. I also finally found a way of cooking that we both like. I like it spicy so I had to figure out how to do it in a way that Mike would like. I found it and now we can’t stop eating it. Any ideas on what we would like for dinner?

Dont throw food away

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

It always amazes me how much food restaurants throw away each day. I used to work in a restaurant and we threw away so much food EVERY SINGLE DAY. One day our managers told us that we were no longer allowed to take home the extra food with us. I remember one woman was actually feeding her family with this left over food and she would cry while she dumped perfectly good food down the garbage disposal. All of us complained so much that we were eventually given the right back to take home food. I felt so bad for this woman while they did this though.

Some kids in my highschool class (not me of course) would go dumpster diving behind SA and Cub. You would be surprised to know that they actually got edible food out of there. It had just reached its expiration date.

Some people say that there is not enough food in the world to feed the population. I just cant see how this is true when restaurants, grocery stores, and gas stations are THROWING AWAY perfectly good food. The only reason we “dont” have enough food is because we are throwing too much of it away. In the restaurant that I worked at we could have just made less food to serve, but they never thought to do that. If you do make too much food, please find someone ot give it to before you just throw it away.

Second Thanksgiving with Mike!

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Can you believe that this will be my second thanksgiving with Mike?! This last year went by so fast. I am so glad that I get to celebrate Thanksgiving with the Kioski family again. Thanksgivings with my old family (holidays in general) were never all that great. Actually, they were miserable. I would try to get out of them by going to work, and most often I was successful. You see, my cousins and Aunts and Uncles generally ignored me at our family gatherings. I know this may be hard to believe because I do enjoy a good conversation, but its true. The one aunt that gave me any attention got a brain tumor and was put in a home (not blood related). I think a lot of the problem was that my extended family thought that we were weird. My parents being members of POP, Catholic, city folk. They were Baptist, country folk. Isnt it weird how people let RELIGION tear them apart? I dont think that is what religion is supposed to do. Perhaps they just didnt like me; who knows. Oh yes, and the only sort of athletic talent I have is in a swimming pool, and my cousins LOVE to play baseball and football. I am not good at either of those. This left hardly anything in common between us. It’s too bad that I could never really be friends with my cousins (after we entered high school). Before highschool was much different. I remember this one time that my cousin who is about my age met one of my friends. He developed a bit of a crush on her and started stumbling all over himself. He was trying to show off for her and fell and kept messing up his speach. I think that is my favorite memory of him. I also remember being taller than him. That is not the case anymore.
But now I get to be with Mike and his family this Thanksgiving. There wont be as many people there, but it will still be fun. If I were still in contact with my parents I would still choose to spend Thanksgiving with the Kioski’s. Then again, being anywhere with Mike makes it all better. I love spending time with him. I wish that we could spend more time along together, but Emma is the number one priority in our lives. Her needs come first. But it is still nice to just know that he is there and that I can get a hug and kiss whenever I want. He never holds out on me and that is one my favorite things about him! I may be a bit biased, but he’s the best husband I could ask for.

Just another benefit of drinking tea

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Staying hydrated is essential to maintaining energy. So before you head to the vending machine in search of a pick-me-up, drink a big glass of water.

“Being dehydrated can make you feel tired, so one of the easiest, calorie-free ways to beat an energy slump is with a tall glass of water or sparkling soda with a twist,” says Carolyn O’Neil, RD, author of The Dish on Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous. “As we age, our thirst mechanisms are not as reliable and don’t work as well. Keep water bottles at your desk or in the car, and sip regularly.”

If water just doesn’t do it for you, try a glass of iced tea or cup of hot tea.

“It makes sense that cultures around the globe have enjoyed the daily ritual of ‘tea time,’ to enjoy a hot beverage and a little snack to perk up their sagging energy levels.” says O’Neil.

Having a cup of tea helps hydrate you, and the addition of a small cookie or dainty tea sandwich is just enough to take the edge off your appetite and energize you until dinner.

“An added bonus is, tea is loaded with antioxidants and other health-promoting substances,” O’Neil says.

Stock your pantry, briefcase, or desk with a variety of tea flavors and individually packed, simple cookies or 100-calorie snack packs so you can enjoy your very own “afternoon tea” time.

Fish oil

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

I’m reading a book by Dr. Sears called “The Omega Rx Zone, The miracle of the new high-dose fish oil.” I borrowed it from my mother in-law. It discusses the wonderful advantages of taking fish oil. It is very good for your brain so it helps out with numerous functions that your brain performs. For instance fish oil reduces the risk of Alzheimers, heart attack, cancer, depression, ADD, obesity, and diabetes. It also helps maintain mood and reduces the affects of menopause, PMS and cramps. It also supposed to make you smarter. My husband and I take fish oil every day and we definitely notice a difference. Of course you wouldnt need to take fish oil every day if you were eating fish every day like they do in places such as Japan; but we dont do that here in teh U.S. Fish oil is definitely something worth looking into. Personally, im not so comfortable with unnatural drugs, so id much rather take fish oil.
I think that this book is worth taking a look at because it goes into great depth on what type of fish oil is good and what is bad. He talks a lot about experiments they have done with fish oil to see what it really can do.
I was talking with Edrie about taking fish oil while I am pregnant and she said it was really important that i do so because Mike has dealt with depression (along with my mother). This makes our baby more susceptible to depression. Of course it is not a cure all, but it will definitely help. also, edrie has a friend who took fish oil while she was pregnant (edrie is always trying to get people to start taking fish oil) and the child was able to learn how to do things pretty quickly.
