i don’t know where i’d be
if i had not met you
i was a broken man
when you found me
when you found me
i became alive
first, let me just say that this song is pretty awesome. i can just picture them all standing around in a circle, playing some chords and then just starting to make up words. and most of the words are really cool, especially don’s. which is why i’m posting them, duh.
so anyhow, what doctrine am i going to talk about today? oh yes, total depravity. don sings “i was a broken man when you found me”. so much is implied in this one line. first off, and most importantly, we see that don believes that he was found by christ and did not find christ. in fact, no one finds christ. all of us are like blind people three miles down in a pitch black cave, searching for a way out. we’re helpless. we have absolutely no clue about which way to go, and that is because of our sin. we have no desire to know which way is out.
also, we see in the next line that not only are we broken, but we’re dead. dead in trespasses and sins, as the bible puts it. dead people can’t find anyone. dead people can’t swim. dead people can’t believe.
praise be to God, who in his sovereign pleasure saved his chosen few from the pit of hell; not because they deserved it in any way, but because he is God and does what he pleases.
a few depravity verses:
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
* by saying don is a closet calvinist, i don’t mean that he’s really a calvinist and pretending to the world he isn’t. i just mean that he says things that are very biblical, but holds to a theological position that is very unbiblical. he clearly reveals the inconsistency of the arminian position. nothing against don. i love the man and his music.
for an explanation of why “calvinist” is now stricken, plese see: http://www.credenda.org/old/issues/vol3/them3-8.htm

I have called myself an amillennialist as long as i’ve been a christian.
Lately, though, I have been studying the postmillennial position. i’ve been waivering back and forth for several months now, trying to find the scriptural position.
now, i am definitely a sola scriptura guy, but while surfing the net this morning i came across an extrabiblical reference which very well may cause me to reject my amillennial roots. i’d like to share it with you.

my friend chris posted this on the back40 today…
I went out with a girl from work last night for some coffee. As conversations have a tendency to do, the talk turned to God. My friend is an admitted agnostic/atheist, and very much entrenched in pluralism.
Her biggest problem with Christianity was christians, which just made the prayer more true.
God, please save me from your people!”
this girl’s biggest problem is not christians. that is an excuse for her unbelief, and it’s a rather poor excuse at that.
i know professing christians that disgust me (and there are, no doubt, professing christians that i disgust). turn on TBN any time of the day, and you’ll see exactly what i’m talking about. but their sin is no reason for me to deny the truth. i’ll direct you to an entry from february: http://chard.blogspot.com/2001_02_01_chard_archive.html#2429539
the girl’s biggest problem is not with other people, but herself. she hates god, and his law. the last thing she wants to do is submit herself in obedience to the lord and creator of all things.

i love my wife. i’m very proud of my wife, and her commitment to christ and his truth. she is a strong christian woman.
i had planned to write more here to defend my wife, and in fact, i did write more… but i deleted it. i believe my wife needs no defense.
the fruit of her hands is obvious, and it shall praise her in the gates.

quote of the day: (overheard in the halls of virginia western community college)
“The other class is also behind as well, too.”
and this was the instructor.
