just looking through my archives, and found this one. I still think you should do it, and much more strongly than I did then.

hey everybody.

i think you should all go give your mom a hug. if you can’t do that, give her a call. tell her that you love her. and more importantly, show her.

and if she happens to make quilts, get her to make you one now.

What You Don’t Know

Because I am connected, I have a copy of Don Chaffer‘s new album, What You Don’t Know (Sorry there’s no link for some place to purchase it. It’s the second of his two upcoming solo albums, so it isn’t even in the prerelease section of stores).

It’s a good album. It has sixteen tracks, the first seven being more rock oriented the last nine being a bit more acoustic and folky. Of course, several of the ‘rock’ songs are excellent as well. There are a few that I just can’t quite accept as actual songs. They’re more like Don-Chaffer-late-at-night-when-he-should-be-sleeping songs, like Restoration.

Of the acoustic songs, one in particular is lack-luster. It’s called windowpane. You may have heard it live, as he’s played it several times.

I’m not yet sure if there’s any more material for my aged ‘why don chaffer is a closet calvinist’ series. If there is, you’ll see it here first.

I’ll fill you in on the first album, Whole ‘Nother Deal, later on.

I have decided to let my hotmail address die. So if you happen to still have it listed in your address book for me, now’s a good time to change it.

An Open Letter to Planned Parenthood from Joost Nixon:

August 13, 2002
Ms. Gloria Feldt
Planned Parenthood
810 7th Avenue
NY, NY 10019

Dear Madam:

The Jewish Anti-defamation League would not have been more surprised to be solicited by Adolf Hitler for a donation for the extermination of the Jews than I was to receive a letter from you-in my church mailbox — soliciting help for Planned Parenthood. Madam, in all sincerity, are you mad?

No, Ms. Feldt, I will not be sending a donation. No, I shall not lobby my congressman. Please forever remove me from your list of potential supporters. I belong on your list of enemies.

With unfeigned sincerity,

Joost Nixon
Pastor
Christ Church

“The contemporary definition of legalism is wrong. Most churchmen are under the impression that legalists try to keep Gods law in order to earn their salvation. This view couldnt be further from the truth. Legalists dont strive to keep Gods law. They strive to keep their own laws. Show me a man who is desperately trying to keep Gods law as perfectly as he can, with attention to every jot and tittle, and Ill show you a justified sinner not, an arrogant letter-of-the-law legalist.”

So says Tristan Emmanuel in his article, Will the real legalist please stand up?

We had a faculty and staff meeting this morning, and the dean of the college gave a few quotes that were really good. Two I found particularly enjoyable are below.

“There is a mighty big different between a good, sound argument and an argument that sounds good.”

“If you are what you do, when you don’t, you ain’t.”

Yesterday I didn’t come in to work. Instead, I went with Megan to an appointment for an ultra sound. The baby is healthy, with an intact body. Arms, legs, abdomin, four-chambered heart, brain, hands, feet, kidneys… it’s all there.

But there was one particular anatomical feature absent.

We did indeed finish Persuasion, and I am quite happy that Anne found a suitable man (even though he might go back to war). Now we’re reading C.S. Lewis’ Space Trilogy. Seems exciting so far. We’ve only read one chapter.

Tonight we are going to Catechism class. One family from church meets every other Friday evening to study the Wesminster Shorter Catechism. Some people are memorizing the questions as we go through. Megan and I were doing that until about question 23. Now we’re pretty far behind, me more than her.

It is hot today. And I don’t just mean outside. The air conditioner isn’t on because they’re installing some new fume hoods. I have a thin layer of perspiration on my forehead.

Megan and I are almost finished with Persuasion, by Jane Austen. We’ve been reading it for some time. Well, actually we have’t. We started reading it quite a while ago, but stopped five or six months ago after three or four chapters, only occasionally reading a chapter or a half since then. But while I was sick the week before last we got back into it, with Megan doing most of the reading. Now we have two chapters left, and things are exciting. People say Jane Austen novels are ladies’ books, and I have to agree with them. But I also think that every man should read at least one. This is the first I’ve read, and I want to read Pride and Prejudice next. I’ve seen the movie, so I sort of know the story, but it will be good to read the book.

We also watched Harvey this weekend. I’d seen it before, but I enjoyed it just as well. I wouldn’t mind owning that movie. It’s got some good examples of what Christian hospitality should look like. And a pooka.

Ann Coulter, author of Slander, is on Sean Hannity today.

She’s accused of being rude and obnoxious, but (surprise, surprise) I really like her.

The book is now on my wishlist
<---- over there. hint, hint.

Where I discuss: reputations

I’m sure by now you’ve heard about the two teenage girls in California who were kidnapped Thursday night and rescued yesterday afternoon. If not, you can read more about it here. I am thankful and glad that these girls came out of this, and safely.

I was listening to Rush Limbaugh earlier. There was a caller who was upset that Sheriff Sparks said these two girls had been raped. He was concerned about their reputations and what not. He felt the sheriff should have kept quiet about this particular aspect of the saga.

Rush responded by saying everyone was already thinking this. The man that had kidnapped them was a convicted rapist. Rush argued that the sheriff didn’t reveal any new information, because everyone knew already that these girls had been raped.

But he didn’t bring up where were these two girls when they were kidnapped. They were at a “lover’s lane” at one o’clock in the morning each in a car with their boyfriend. Doesn’t seem to me like there’s much of a reputation to save.

I am still surprised (though, really, why should I be?) that this was never brought up by anyone. These girls were out at 1 in the morning with their boyfriends. What kind of parenting is that? And it appears to be overlooked by everyone.

Oh wait! Just this moment Sean Hannity came on, and he brought up that point. Way to go Sean! Just for that, here’s a plug hannity.com (I’m sure he’s excited about that)
