Over a year ago I made a resolution.
I decided, rather haphazardly, that I was not going to purchase CDs that were put out by Christian labels. I made this decision for a variety of reasons, but the main reason was that I didn’t like what I heard on Christian radio stations. I knew that Christian radio was controlled by Christian record labels, and they wanted to sell records, not make good music. I wanted to make a difference.
I stuck too my resolution. I haven’t bought any CDs from a Christian label, unless you consider Compass Records a Christian label and getting new CDs from selling old ones at Spun.com buying (I got all three of Pierce Pettis’ CDs some time in the past year in this way). Other CDs I’ve bought have either been independent or not on Christian labels.
So after this experience, what do I have to say? Well, far from making a difference in the Christian music industry, I have found that what I did was next to worthless. It wasn’t quite worthless because I did realize something. I realized that I don’t have to try to fix the Christian music industry.
All this to say that I have officially ended my resolution. Now I’m going to enjoy some of the talent that God has blessed His people with (and you can bet that I will not be attempting to enjoy those who refuse to accept that He has not blessed them in that way).
