g-mail

I got a Gmail account. But, did you know that gmail is originally the name of Glen Phillips mailing list? I wonder if he got some money out of this deal. Speaking of Glen Phillips (he’s one of the guys from toad the wet sprocket, if you didn’t know), he recently signed with a label… Lost Highway Records. He should have a new album out in September. Also, Glen joined up with Nickel Creek to form the band Mutual Admiration Society, and there should be an album out from them on July 13th. Anyhow, my gmail account is okimotor(at)gmail.com. Feel free to use it.

And now the question is…. What kind of manly powertools should I buy?

This Friday we find out if the baby is a girl or a boy. Megan is convinced it is a boy, because she has felt so different this time. I am skeptical… don’t want to get my hopes up. I have said, though, that if it is another (wonderful) girl, I am going to have to go out and buy some powertools or something just as manly.

In other news, some friends (the guy that wrote the bacon article, if you recall) are closing on the house three doors down from us on Thursday. We’re excited about that. They’re also expecting their first child sometime in the middle of May. And we’re taking over the street. They’ll make the fourth family from Providence on our street. It’s going to make for some great block parties.

I think the internet, generally, makes people cantankerous.

At least, I hope it’s just the internet… otherwise there are a whole lot of cranky people out there.

I am home today. I have spent the morning making periodic sacrifices at the porcelain altar.

Not fun.

“It is not for nothing that you are named Ransom,” said the Voice.

And he knew that this was no fancy of his own. He knew it for a very curious reason – because he had known for many years that his surname was derived not from ransom but from Ranolf’s son. It would never have occurred to him thus to associate the two words. To connect the name Ransom with the act of ransoming would have been for him a mere pun. But even his voluble self did not now dare to suggest that the Voice was making a play upon words. All in a moment of time he perceived that what was, to human philologists, a merely accidental resemblance of two sounds, was in truth no accident.
~
Before his Mother had born him, before his ancestors had been called Ransoms, before
ransom had been the name for a payment that delivers, before the world was made, all these things had so stood together in eternity that the very significance of the pattern at this point lay in their coming together in just this fashion.
