Christ’s love

Posted by: richard   in Everyday Things

This morning I was on a messageboard that is generally christian. Not everyone there professes to be a christian, but it isn’t a question that most that post there are. And one particular discussion became what I think was plainly lewd. And I spoke up about it, ever so briefly. Of course, that only spurned them on and I didn’t have anything more to do with it. However, one comment made when they cranked up their trashytalk was that he expected a bible to come flying by his head with the comment “I am filled with Christ’s love!”. That’s a reference to the movie Saved!, by the way.

And so that got me to thinking about Christ’s love. His love is for His bride, and He is conquering His enemies for her.

Is it strange to consider that Christ is fighting for His bride? Is it unsettling to imagine Christ beating up the punk that is taunting her?

It is for me, and I think that is a problem. Perhaps a confusion with a modernist take on love. If you love something, you will fight to protect it. A man that let’s a thug tease and harass his wife is showing a lack of love for his wife.

Of course, the bit from the movie was trite and not what I have in mind. But when someone claiming to be a Christian is blatantly dishonoring God, isn’t it the love of Christ that causes us to do something about it? (and, just to be clear, that isn’t always physically beating the tar out of them).

Love requires action.

The June 19th White Horse Inn is an interview with Douglas Wilson. The following show, June 26, is called Finding God in Harry Potter?.

I think I’ll buy both of them.
