Ashley update

So the appointment with the orthopedist went all right. The doctor was nice, looked at her injury and felt it with his fingers. He said it was still lined up fairly well, and will be mostly healed in 3 weeks, and thoroughly healed in 6. He didn’t know if the ‘figure 8 brace’ would fit her little body or not, and didn’t seem to be too bothered by the thought of it not fitting her.

We sat for way too long in the office waiting to find out, so we stepped out. The nurse was pretty rude to us, saying they were getting the brace. I asked how long it would be, and she just said they were in the process. Then she snapped that we could get it somewhere else if we had to be somewhere. Well… after sitting in that tiny room for at least 45 minutes (after waiting the lobby another 45 or so) with a hurting, hungry little girl.. I decided I’d waiting enough. So we left.

We’ll look around a bit for the brace, but I’m not feelin pressed to get it. We just need to make sure Ashley takes it easy and doesn’t do crazy things to hurt it more.

i broke my collarbone in 6th grade. i didn’t get a brace because at first the doctor didn’t see the fracture. i couldn’t move my arm, and she told me to keep trying to move it. a few weeks later i got a big knot on the bone(as it was healing), and went back only to find out that it really was broken and it was too late for the brace. and i shouldn’t have been trying to move it. dumb HMOs.

anyway, i hope ashley is doing better. if you don’t get the figure 8, it might be a good idea to at least get her a sling for that arm. and don’t freak out like my mom did if she gets a big bump!

Yeah, the cool thing is that the doctor said she’d have a bump, but since she’s so small, as she grows it will remodel, so that when she’s grown, it won’t be noticeable.

that’s good. mine did go away totally within several weeks. it was whatever forms on a bone natually to heal it…i forget what it’s called…

I have a permanent bump and angle, but my break was nasty… popped the clavicle out of the sternum and made a protruding break in the clavicle itself.

But why am I telling you this? Ashley will heal quickly & well. A brace helps in a break that is misaligned. A fracture, I think, would heal pretty easily.

Poor sweet girl! Glad the prognosis is good.

Thanks everybody! ;^)

She is being a trooper, and likes living a little too close the edge for me! (As in, jumping off of chairs at church…yikes…)
