I know that mentality exists. I worked in a public school. But I cringe hearing it coming from an elected official who might end up in the White House. Sigh.
I thought he was right on the money. He doesn’t view life as a punishment. He has two beautiful daughters. But no one needs a baby at 16… you’re still a baby yourself. He was only saying that we need to educate our children. I also have two daughters (ages 11&13) and I talk to them them about remaining abstinent until they are ready. But I also talk about pregnancy, STD’s and safety. They have both been vaccinated against cervical cancer and they will begin birth control at fourteen or fifteen. I became a mother at 17 years old and I would like to see my daughters get through college and have a life of their own before they have children. I don’t think Mr. Obama was saying anything many could disagree with. And the topic was education, not abortion.
He said, quite explicitly, that having a child is punishment. My guess is he would qualify the statement by saying that unwanted children are punishment.
Either way, I think it’s a horrible attitude, and I despise it. I also reject the idea that having a child negates any life for the parents. It stems from the same poor attitude towards life and children that Obama evidenced with his comment.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Surely he’ll have to get SOME flak for this?!
Yes, we can?

Also, I’m older than you.
I wish I could be punished with such—-
I think that Sharon’s “you’re still a baby yourself” comment was to be understood as “when you’re 16″.
But I’m with you, Richard.
Yeah, Megan pointed that out to me last night. Oh well.
