Challenge Again

   Posted by: richard   in Regimen

So I’ve signed up, again, for the 300 miles challenge. I signed up a while back, to begin on July 1. Which may not have been the best idea, now that I consider it. Because Megan is going to be having the baby in the next week or so. Which means I will not be coming to work, and will be staying with the kids, which means I will not be riding my bike… to work or anywhere else. But, maybe I can throw in a few extra 10 and 15 mile rides to catch up. We’ll see.

I’m still doing pretty okay on the bike. I’ve ridden to work at least 4 days a week since my last update, and also went out on the trail for 15 miles one time.

Pushups have been lame, though. Or, I have been lame in doing my pushups.

I got street tires for my mountain bike this weekend. Man, what a difference that makes. I took it out on Sunday and logged 30 miles. Man, that felt great.

I intentionally rode in a higher gear so that I could get a bit more of a workout than usual. My legs are sore this morning, but it’s a good kind of sore.

I think I’ll ride to work tomorrow, pending my leg soreness and weather.

I couple weeks ago… maybe a month, when I laid down to bed, I pondered to Megan whether my legs would just always feel sore… if they’d ever get used to riding. Because they were pretty much constantly since I started riding back in April.

But now they aren’t anymore. Which I guess is good… I’m hoping now I’ll start seeing my weight drop some. Because it’s not very encouraging to see all the extra calories I’m burning, and not see any change on the scale. I tell myself it’s been a little muscle development in my legs. Now they’re pretty steady, so I want to lose some of the belly I’ve developed.

Yeah, I’ve lost a lot of fat in the legs. We’re doing a “Biggest Loser” competition in the office, so I’ve been working pretty hard on watching what I eat. It’s been about 2 months since I’ve had *anything* fried. And I live in Georgia. That’s gotta be a record.

I’ve mixed in the road biking with the mountain biking hoping to improve my leg strength and stamina. (The gas $$$ savings is just bonus, really.) When I’m riding off road, I need some extra power on some of the long climbs. Commuting 2-3 times each week should help a lot with that.

My bike doesn’t do very well at all off the pavement. I’ve ridden on grass and packed dirt roads… but anything more than that and I’d be scared. So when I’m riding down the bike trail, and see all the turnoffs for mountain biking… I start wanting another bike for those trails.

Maybe one day I’ll get a $150 bike from Walmart or something for that stuff.

How long does it take you to do a 30 mile ride, btw?

My bike is a Specialized Rockhopper. $600ish MSRP. If you’re not an ogre-sized whale of a man like me, you can probably pick up something similar from craigslist for about the same as you’d pay for something at Wal-Mart. The difference would be in quality of a bike. I’d opt for the more expensive used bike, if that’s an option.

The 30-mile ride was the first I’ve done that long. It was right at 50 minutes to the halfway point. Then I rested for 10-15 and came back. I should have packed a banana or something to eat when I took the break because I really got tired with about 5 miles left. The 2nd half took about 55 minutes…the uphill climbs really slowed me down on the way back.

Not bad though…averaging 15mph for 2 hours. I’m no professional, but that’s not too bad of a speed.
