But Before I Go

Posted by: richard   in Everyday Things

An announcement before my departure…

‘How differently we feel!’ cried Fanny. ‘To me, the sound of Mr. Bertram is so cold and nothing-meaning - so entirely without warmth or character! - It just stands for a gentleman, and that’s all. But there is nobleness in the name of Edmund. It is a name of heroism and renown - of kings, princes, and knights; and seems to breathe the spirit of chivalry and warm affections.’

Edmund Alexander Okimoto was born July 8th 2008. He is a healthy, happy boy.

Phone Etiquette

Posted by: richard   in Dinner Conversation

Here’s the best we can make of a telephone conversation Geneva had the other day.

First, she started speaking before she had lifted the receiver up to her mouth, so all the person her was,

G: this is Geneva
Other End: Hi, is your mom or dad available?
G: No. But they’re both home. they’re sitting in the living room and we’re playing with american girl dolls.
OE: Do you think one of them could run to the phone?
G: Well, my mom can’t really run right now.
OE: Could you get either your mom or your dad for me to talk to?
G: okay.
She then spends several minutes deliberating on whether she’s going to get me or megan.

A Few Quotes

Posted by: richard   in Everyday Things

Here are a few lines I’ve read or listened to the past few days, that sort of stand out to me.

“Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.”
Ecclesiastes 7:19

“Laugh and fear not, creatures. Now that you are no longer dumb and witless, you need not always be grave. For jokes as well as justice come in with speech.”
Aslan, in The Magician’s Nephew

“Where’s all my heroes?//Have they all gone away?//If ever I needed a Saviour//Well, today’s the day.”
Dime Store Prophets, Whirlwind

kids magazines

Posted by: richard   in Everyday Things

Does anyone have suggestions for magazines for children? Geneva will be 7 this year, so anything up to that age range would be great. I’d actually like to get something different for each of the kids.

emusic downloads

   Posted by: richard   in emusic

Whew… I failed in keeping you, my good readers, updated on what I’ve purchased on emusic lately. Two and a half months. Well, lucky for you (or maybe not), I have kept up with everything I’ve downloaded since then. So, here’s the list in all it’s glory (and ordered by date downloaded (earliest to most recent)):

single,Don McLean-American Pie (from Rearview Mirror)

My Teenage Stride-Lesser Demons

The Frames-For the Birds

The Weepies-Hideaway

Colour Revolt-Plunder, Beg, and Curse
Since there are so many I’m not commenting on most of these downloads, but I have to note this one. Avoid it. One song was a free download, and I liked it okay and downloaded the whole album. I haven’t been able to listen through the whole thing yet.

My Brightest Diamond-Inside a Boy EP

My Brightest Diamond-Bring Me the Workhorse

Ben Sollee-If You’re Gonna Lead My Country EP

Caleb Carruth-Darkness Falls

Abigail Washburn-Songs of the Traveling Daughter

A couple singles from P.M. Dawn’s greatest hitsLooking through Patiest Eyes and I’d Die Without You.

A few Joan Jett singles… I Love Rock N’ Roll and Louie, Louie from the I Love Rock N’ Roll album, and Bad Reputation from the album of the same title.
I got these songs for sentimental reasons, and I’m shocked at the content. I was listening to these songs as a kid… and I don’t know if its good or bad that I had no idea what they were about.

Mike Garrigan-The Promise of Summer

Josh Rouse-Country Mouse, City House

The Weepies-Happiness

single, Derek Webb-I Believe from Life Is Precious: A Wes King Tribute

The Billions-Never Felt This Way Before

My Greatest Diamond-A Thousand Shark’s Teeth

Steve Tannen-Stopped at a Green Light

Deb Talon-A Bird Flies Out

single, Liz Phair-Never Said from Exile in Guyville

single, Gillian Welch-Black Star (a Radiohead cover)

Laura Cantrell-Trains and Boats and Planes EP

Steve Tannen-Big Senorita

Dinosaur Jr-Beyond

Cycling and Auto Insurance

Posted by: richard   in Everyday Things

After seeing this article, I logged in to Geico’s website and updated my vehicle usage. I have consistently been riding my bike to work at least 4 days a week the past several months That change saved me about $30 on my six month premium.

Research shows that when red wine is consumed with red meat, it inhibits the formation and absorption of toxic chemicals formed in the digestion of the meat.
