emusic downloads

   Posted by: richard   in emusic

Whew… I failed in keeping you, my good readers, updated on what I’ve purchased on emusic lately. Two and a half months. Well, lucky for you (or maybe not), I have kept up with everything I’ve downloaded since then. So, here’s the list in all it’s glory (and ordered by date downloaded (earliest to most recent)):

single,Don McLean-American Pie (from Rearview Mirror)

My Teenage Stride-Lesser Demons

The Frames-For the Birds

The Weepies-Hideaway

Colour Revolt-Plunder, Beg, and Curse
Since there are so many I’m not commenting on most of these downloads, but I have to note this one. Avoid it. One song was a free download, and I liked it okay and downloaded the whole album. I haven’t been able to listen through the whole thing yet.

My Brightest Diamond-Inside a Boy EP

My Brightest Diamond-Bring Me the Workhorse

Ben Sollee-If You’re Gonna Lead My Country EP

Caleb Carruth-Darkness Falls

Abigail Washburn-Songs of the Traveling Daughter

A couple singles from P.M. Dawn’s greatest hitsLooking through Patiest Eyes and I’d Die Without You.

A few Joan Jett singles… I Love Rock N’ Roll and Louie, Louie from the I Love Rock N’ Roll album, and Bad Reputation from the album of the same title.
I got these songs for sentimental reasons, and I’m shocked at the content. I was listening to these songs as a kid… and I don’t know if its good or bad that I had no idea what they were about.

Mike Garrigan-The Promise of Summer

Josh Rouse-Country Mouse, City House

The Weepies-Happiness

single, Derek Webb-I Believe from Life Is Precious: A Wes King Tribute

The Billions-Never Felt This Way Before

My Greatest Diamond-A Thousand Shark’s Teeth

Steve Tannen-Stopped at a Green Light

Deb Talon-A Bird Flies Out

single, Liz Phair-Never Said from Exile in Guyville

single, Gillian Welch-Black Star (a Radiohead cover)

Laura Cantrell-Trains and Boats and Planes EP

Steve Tannen-Big Senorita

Dinosaur Jr-Beyond

So, what did you think of Big Señorita and A Bird Flies Out?

What do you think of the My Brightest Diamond releases? I am really digging the latest, especially the songs “Inside A Boy” and “To Plutos Moon”.

Geof,

I just downloaded Big Senorita today, so I haven’t listened to it yet. I got Stopped at a Green Light last week with Deb’s record. I’ve only been able to listen to those two twice and some change, and that was while doing some work so it was sort of in and out of my head. I hope to give them a more attentive listen soon.

From what I have heard, they are both distinct in sound from The Weepies, which surprised me a bit. It’s not completely different from their newer stuff, but enough to make me realize that my expectations were off. I think they’re much better together (or maybe it’s just after the years they’ve matured since those albums released). Also, Deb’s vocals had a bit more of a strange… resonance maybe? There’s a sort of weird thing she does with her voice, even on Weepies records, that I think was a little out of control at times on this one.

Travis,
I like A Thousand Shark’s Teeth more than Bring Me the Workhorse. I never downloaded BMtW because the samples just didn’t stand out. But I downloaded the Inside a Boy EP and really liked what I heard, so I went ahead and got the previous album, thinking it would grow on me. It didn’t grow a whole lot (it’s not terrible, but it doesn’t jump out at me as great), but got A Thousand Shark’s Teeth the day it was released, and it’s gotten more listen time than BMtW.

Also, Ben Shive’s record, which isn’t on emusic, has taken the lion’s share of listening since it released. I like it more each listen. So I’ve been neglecting some of my other music acquisitions.
