so i played hooky from work friday which was awesome. a nice birthday present to myself i thought, and it was great. the weekend lasted a long time. friday night my parents took me out, then my friend len stopped by on his way home from flight school. we played dance dance revolution and that was really fun. i’m looking forward to him finishing up and moving two short miles away. saturday was the yearly crawfish boil with my family for my grandmother and i. my grandmother pretty much sat there with those big old people sunglasses the whole time, it was sunny. the crawfish were good, we threw the frisbee around, it was a good day. my aunt got one of those new honda minivans. that thing has every bell and whistle you could ask for. i told my mom that i felt i grew up deprived since i actually had to pull doors shut in our old caravan (the honda does it automatically), we didn’t have a dvd player with a remote for the backseat, nor doors on either side, or a/c controls. oh, and the honda does navigation via voice command. what in the world? i’m definitely not getting all that for my kids. some children just have to learn how to deal with being on the road without such comforts as dvds and two sliding doors. then saturday i had some friends over, we broke in my new bbq grill and watched the basketball games. we played dance dance revolution then too, and that was fun. maybe next time my sister will play. yesterday was nice, i slept late, you know, to adjust to the new time change, ran some errands, and then remembered the concert i was planning to go to, mute math. i called up my friend danielle who called people she knew who were going, i met up with them and into n.o. we went. i usually hate going, but i make exceptions for concerts and sporting events.
the following is my review of the show…
its been a while since i reviewed a concert, and its not because I’ve been lazy, but unfortunately i have not gone to many shows lately that I’ve wanted to write about. last night is getting my words flowing though. i saw mat kearney and mute math at the house of blues (the parish @ the hob) last night. same venue I saw damien rice and phantom planet, tight, intimate, awesome. mat kearney i really only knew from people talking on the board or the people i rode in with. apparently one of the girl’s fiancée is friends with him, but even so, i had never heard any of his stuff. he was good, although the freestyling threw me off at first, by the end I was really enjoying it. ‘bullet’ was probably one of the best songs I’ve heard. i LOVE the chorus, and pretty much after that song I decided to go get the cd. $10, how can you go wrong?
then we have mute math. my gosh, they came out and opened with ‘chaos’ and ‘plan b’. i was astounded. all I could think of was “this is so goodâ€. the sound was perfect and they have such a unique and real stage presence. the drummer had to tape his headphones on because he was going so crazy. and dare i say he was one of the best drummers I’ve ever witnessed? they kind of reminded me of radiohead when the guitarist would change from the guitar to some kind of electric slide guitar. when i saw radiohead, their guitarists did the same type thing on the last song. anyway, mute math seriously had talent. sonically it was great, and i liked all of the new songs. i wish i could remember them all. ‘chaos’, ‘stare at the sun’, ‘scars’, and ‘everything breaks the same’ i know were new. they actually did ‘reset’, which on the EP is all electronic stuff, and it sounded great. i want to say during that song is when paul (the lead singer) almost fell into the crowd, but i could be wrong. they finished the main set with ‘control’, and then paul came out for the encore and did ‘ok’ solo, then everyone came back out and they finished with ‘everything breaks the same’ and let me tell you, it was freaking awesome. i think they played for a good 75 minutes, and considering they only have a 7 song EP in their catalogue, I say they did pretty good. i was just really amazed at how good the show was. i knew i’d like it, but it exceeded expectations and then some. oh, and the full length album comes out september, which can’t come fast enough!
my recommendation, go see them. they started out with the hometown show and are going on a massive tour (including the viper room in L.A. and playing NYC!) which lasts actually through august. mat kearney is listed as opening for them throughout. check the webpage, listen to the songs, if you like them, make your plans.
so that was my weekend. this summer is shaping up to be quite a good one. i still don’t know if i’ll move, but if i don’t i may not mind too much. i have a couple of more stories, but this entry has gotten long enough. i’ll update tomorrow or something.
