yow! there goes the season…
so i’ve been having this soreness in my arm for like a month or two. i thought at first it was a pulled muscle, but after emailing a couple of friends who are actual physical therapists, i realized it probably was more serious. my friend buffy told me i should go see an orthopedist, so i did that on Tuesday. he looked at some x-rays, and moved my arm around a bit and diagnosed that i had a torn labrum. surgery is pretty much inevitable since this type of injury does not heal itself, even with therapy. i’m supposed to start regular PT on Monday. the swimming dream is probably dead for now. i don’t have a major tear, because i had looked up the injury on the internet, and some people are really bad off. mine’s minor in comparison, but still, inevitable surgery sucks. i’m supposed to go back to the doctor in october, after about a month of PT to see where my shoulder is, and then probably get an MRI done. depending on what i hear Monday (ie if they think the diagnosis was correct or not), i may go get a 2nd opinion. there’s no shame in having a torn labrum though, cause athletes have this injury a lot….so i guess i could call up Drew Brees and ask his opinion on what surgeon to get. he seems to have come back pretty good from his surgery.
work’s been pretty decent this week….all of our deadlines we had that i thought were absurd got moved back. we might actually be able to design something before people review it. what a novel concept! of course, there are no guarantees, but there’s hope at least.

Sorry for your shoulder

How do they think that happened?

usually football players get hit on the shoulder or something, but i really don’t remember how it happened. i don’t know if i overextended my arm or what. i don’t remember anything specific causing me pain like that.
as long as i don’t do much activity overhead, it’s not a big deal. and it doesn’t cause me constant pain….still….i’m not 100%.

An injured shoulder? Boo!
I hope the PT helps some.

So you’re gonna see Dr. Andrews, right?
Seriously, it’s not much fun rehabbing, but you ought to do it.

How did you first meet up with Buffy? Was it at my wedding?

Oh gosh, my sympathies on your shoulder and impending surgery D: And you didn’t do anything to it? That’s kind of bizarre…

Geof, i have thought about Dr. Andrews, but i heard it’d just be one of his residents. still though, i bet he’s got some cool memorabilia on his walls.
Jen, i met Buffy at Michelle’s wedding. remember, you, me and chad slept over at her apartment? (i think?)
X, i just don’t remember. i might have done something that i didn’t think was a big deal at the time that was when i hurt it, but i don’t know.

I was just pulling your leg.
Most any competent ortho surgeon should do a good job.

Aren’t I an awesome friend? Just kidding! But I’m glad you listened to my suggestion and had it looked at!

I have vivid memories of seeing a cadaver’s labrum in anatomy lab. It’s amazing such a small thing can cause so much of an issue, isn’t it?
