Back in the day, when I was 16…

Twas only two years ago I reached that monumental mark of 16 years old. Everything changed. And here I am at another monumental mark, the age of eighteen…and I don’t feel any different than I did one day ago. Granted, I feel different than I did a couple of weeks ago, before I moved in here at Carson-Newman, but in twenty-four hours my life hasn’t changed. I love that about life. It’s a process. You’re moving steadily onward into adulthood, into middleage-hood, and into old-hood. What would be the good in being the same 17 year old for a year, only to become a new 18 year old one day. Growth is a continuous process, essential to life. It may not always seem good, but in the end you find yourself a different person.

Life is good.

Me and my guitar

So the Sage‘s blog pointed me to this article about guitars. And I literally almost got teary-eyed reading it. There is nothing in life, other than God, that I get as passionate about as I do my guitars. With a six-string (or sometimes a twelve-string) in my hand…all the problems, all the pain….it all goes away.

I’ll just leave you with part of the article. Read the whole thing, though.

And I think you know who you are. Some men keep guitars under their beds. Some men keep guitars in their hallway closets. Some men keep guitars in a corner of the living room, on three-pronged guitar stands they bought at the shop where they buy strings, until they are asked to move their guitars to a guest room or the garage. And teen-age men, who sit on waterbeds beneath posters and work out chord progressions with the amp turned down low, or turned up, depending on the current state of domestic affairs. Men with electric guitars are men who — secretly or plainly — wish to start or join a band. To be a great among greats, looking back at the crowd for once instead of looking out from it. Otherwise the guitar wouldn’t have to be plugged in, a life-death metaphor in show business and hospitals.

Men with acoustic guitars wish to be charming, so they can be in love. They believe in campfires and circular meanings contained in simple narratives. They have messages: Jesus Saves and He is Groovy. This War is Hell. You Broke My Heart But I Love You Anyways.

A man buys a guitar and classifies himself. There is a beauty in the having, the keeping, the care. There is a suffering as well, not being virtuoso.

Whether he plays it.

Whether he doesn’t, and it stays under the bed.

Wow…

So everything fit in my car.

Easily.

I was shocked.

Twelve and a half hours and counting, yo.

“So long sweet summer…”

Well, here I am. One day away from college. It seems so strange. I seem so far away from the few months ago that I was still in high school, yet so far away from the few hours from now that I’ll be getting up and moving all my things from the home I’ve lived in for almost 18 years, to the home I’ll live in during the fall and spring for the next four years. I’m in some sort of cosmic limbo where I don’t have a place, even though I know I’ll have a place in just a few hours. It’s a strange feeling, really.

I must say, this last lazy summer has been fantastic. I’ve made some great friends, and done some exciting things. But I’m ready to move on, ready for that next thing. And I hope you’ll join me on the journey…

So keep ‘em coming, these lines on the road
Keep me responsible, be it a light or heavy load
And keep me guessing, with these blessings in disguise
And I’ll walk with grace my feet, and faith my eyes

Also got the “Subscribe to Comments” plugin, so you guys can check a box to get emails everytime someone replies to a comment you make on this blog.

All this brought brought to you thanks to the work of Geof Morris, who got this sucker up to WordPress 1.2…we preshadit Geof.

Best Random Purchase I’ve Ever Made

So I was just pondering on what might be my best and most rewarding random purchase ever.

And I realized.

That it was a no-brainer.

Matt Wertz – Somedays.

I was at Cedar Springs Christian Store, looking around in the acoustic section, and found a cd by this fella…and I thought, “that name sounds familiar…I wonder if I’ve heard of him on the boards?” (and yes, I do include hyperlinks in my thoughts) So I bought the thing…just for the heck of it. And my life was forever changed. I became a rabid fanboy, obsessed with every piece of music Wertz ever recorded…all three cds and eleventy billion bootlegs available. Through Wertz, I then got hooked on Dave Barnes, Andy Davis, Griffin House, Marc Broussard, and many many many others.

Thank you, Random Purchase…thank you.

The latest in Joe’s music world

I thought I’d post a little about what I’ve been blaring lately, what music’s been playing on my computer, and in my car.

Yes, I know I’m stealing the idea from Andy….back off.

So here are the cd’s that I can’t seem to get enough of. Some are new, some have been staples in my players for months already.

Kanye West – College Dropout – I’ve been tearing this one up in the car almost constantly since I got it right before we left for SuperWow. SUCH a talented rapper and producer. I can’t get enough of it.

Watashi Wa – The Love of Life – A new Toothandnail artist…killer cd. FANTASTIC cruisin’ music.

Matt Wertz – twentythreeplaces – Yes, it’s still playing. I can’t escape the Wertz-man. It’s impossible

Gavin Degraw, Pete Schmidt, Matt Nathanson, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Mutual Admiration Society, and Marc Broussard live bootlegs from archive.org. Killer…just killer.

Bleach – Astronomy – You’d think I’d run out of stuff to listen to…but all this stuff gets steady rotation, I swear. I listen to this one in some of my “emotional” times. Especially the song “Patience.” It hits me. Hard.

That’s all for now. Although I could do this all day.

Geof is a Sieve!

Yeah, I am.

I overwrote Joe’s stylesheet on accident.

You can flog me in the comments; thankfully, he has a backup.
